Kolkata, July 11 (NITN): Sohini Roychowdhury presented Thumri from the Benaras Gharana which were highly appreciated by the audience in Kolkata recently.
Among the guests, Vijay Kichlu, Abin Chowdhury on the occasion of the Thumri Festival held at the Chowdhury House recently
She started off with a Misra khamaj Thumri followed Deewana Kiye Shyam was a rendition in Raag Charukeshi her next presentation was Jhoola Dheere se Jhulao in Raag Majh Khamaj and then she sang Savariya Pyara Re Mori Gudiya, a very old Dadra composition in Raag Piloo and the finale was a Kajri (monsoon song) in Raag Deshmalhar...Savan Mase Aayo Sajani depicting the onset of monsson
She was supported by Sri Babu Bardhan on harmonium and Surojit Saha on Tabla, both performed wonderfully.
Sohini is a classical vocalist trained by Pandit A. Kanan and Ustad Sagiruddin Khan in Kirana Gharana.
She also has a rich repertoire of Thumri, Dadra, Kajri, Hori, and other semi-classical forms from Smt. Dalia Rahut in Benaras Gharana. Sohini is the niece of R. D Burman , granddaughter of Shyamal Sen on the paternal side and great-granddaughter of Kanto Kabi Rajanikato Sen on the maternal side.
